Polyunsaturated Fats – The healthier fats
These are a healthier form of fats than saturated fats or trans fats. Generally polyunsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature and when cooled in the fridge.
Why are polyunsaturated fats good for you?
Polyunsaturated fats can help to reduce the level of bad cholesterol and therefore lower the risk of developing heart disease. Polyunsaturates also include the Omega 3 and 6 family of essential fatty acids. Omega 3 and 6 are great to boost the immune system and maintain everyday bodily functions. The easiest way to remember is that polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats can positivitly effect your health when consumed in moderation, and that saturated and trans fat increase your bad cholesterol and affect your body in a negative way.
Where can you find polyunsaturated fats?
Salmon, mackerel, herring, trout, walnuts, sunflower seeds. Although polyunsaturated fats are also found in smaller proportions in many everyday foods. Rememember there is no difference in the calorie content of polyunsaturated fats compared to saturated and trans fats. All fats contain calories, however some fats are healthier for you, like polyunsaturated fats.
Generally aim for a low fat diet, but if you are having fats in your meals, then choose monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats over saturated fats and trans fats.
